Through The Mist

Reapers have shown their newly gained power rendering the wall useless, but despite the evidence of multiple wall-breaches the High Command are choosing only to repair the wall and have faith that the wall will not fall another time. Barely surviving the attack by the Reaper, the ‘Breach Patrol’ consisting of, leader Joe, tank Jeff, sniper Helen, and fun guy Frank, are preparing to go on an unsanctioned mission into the mist ring in hopes of finding the Reaper’s nest and destroying it.
“Take one last look guys.” Said Joe as they were leaving the Wall behind them. “We might never see this place again.”
They all took one final look at the place they had lived all their lives, with a quiet, almost solemn atmosphere about them. They realised that their next journey would either result in the freedom of their friends and family or their collective demise. Tying themselves together, so that they don’t get separated, they turn and walk into the mist. As they walk on the get fainter and fainter until the mist had completely engulfed them and hidden them from sight.
The team make their way through the mist, it feels as if they are walking through countless cobwebs wet from morning dew, only able to see a few feet in front of their faces. They are constantly checking their step occasionally coming across the horrifying sight of a fallen member of a past wall patrol. The team trudge on sometimes hearing the sound of little feet scuttling across the ground somewhere in the background, or the screeches of some terrible beast off in the distance. Suddenly they heard a blood curdling scream all to close for comfort, not knowing what this was they all pulled out their weapons.
“What was that!” cried Frank.
“I don’t know.” Said Joe.
Then out of the mist above them came a flying creature black as pitch one and a half feet long, with a wingspan of two and a half feet. This creature swooped down over their heads making them duck suddenly and then, ‘BANG!!!’, it dropped dead, Helen had shot it.
“Let’s carry on guys.” Said Helen.
They walked on slowly constantly looking around keeping an ear out for any possible predators. The atmosphere about them was not one for conversation so the trek was one of silence, that was until they came to the point where they could see a little further into the mist as if it were getting thinner. Then finally after 3 hours of trudging through the mist they come to the edge. What lies before them is a horrifying sight, where they imagined finding a nest, straight up in their face, they find a lush green valley stretching as far as the eye can see and in the centre of the valley there is a glowing, cone-like structure and hundreds of Reapers guarding the sole entrance to the entire nest.
“I can’t believe it!” said Joe with a lump in his throat. “All that time we had been living behind that wall, and this was only a few hours walk away?”
“There’s the nest.” Said Jeff. “I suggest we spend the night here and scout out the surrounding area.”
“Agreed.” Replied Joe.
They set up camp on a nearby ridge, then went out to survey the surrounding area finding things that fit the description of apples and bananas (only heard of in legend). Then it dawned on them, they were in the land that their grandparent’s grandparents had told stories about, ‘A Land Lost. A Land from before Reapers. A Land Before the Mist.’ This was it the lost land, only it was still crawling with Reapers. With this newfound knowledge they returned to camp to eat a delicious hot meal and get a good night rest in preparation for the inevitable conflict.
“Good morning, everyone.” Said Joe “None of us asked to do what we are about to do, but we are all here. I would like to say thank you and wish you courage in the coming battle.”
“We’re here for you Joe.” Said Jeff.
“Yeah!” Said Frank “Let’s go show that Reaper Queen who’s boss.”
