The alignment of Science and the Bible on the subject of the Flood of Noah.
The purpose of this article is to address the evidence for a Global Flood as described in Genesis chapters 6–9. I will be writing on 3 main points, but by no means will I have covered all the arguments for a Global Flood.
My first point will be on the fossil record and how it is in harmony with the events depicted in Genesis. The Bible was quite clear that the waters covered the whole world and even the tallest mountains were covered, the evidence for this is fish fossils on the top of Mount Everest furthermore the layers that these fossils are buried in were deposited by water. As I just stated fossils are found all around the world in water deposited layers, laid quickly and then put under tremendous pressure allowing the thousands of fossils we have to day to form in just a matter of hours. As a final note on the fossil record land animals are found in the same layers as sea creatures further indicating a connection to water in the burial of these creatures. This is why I believe that most of the fossils found today were deposited by Noah’s flood not gradually over millions of years.
My second point today will be on the design of the Ark of Noah. In Genesis 6 v 15, the dimensions of the Ark are given being, 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. These dimensions are the perfect dimensions for a balance of comfort, stability, and strength. Now consider when this account was penned by Moses and when the events took place, shipbuilding wasn’t a science there weren’t any equations or anything so the only way these designs could have come about is if they were written by the Divine Architect. Furthermore in verse 16 the interior design of the Ark is described having 3 floors this fixes a very important issue with the size of the Ark, as ships got bigger in the 17–1800’s the engineers noticed that they would start to twist along the length of the ship as they were hit by the winds and waves. Thankfully this issue can be remedied through the use of strong beams in a grid-like formation throughout the ship, this had to have been done in the Ark to support the multiple floors. These key design points partnered with the addition of pitch inside and out, make the perfect Ark to hold 2 of every KIND of animal.
The final point I’m going to cover is the fact that there is a Flood Legend in cultures all around the globe. I’m going to present 2 examples of a flood legend, but there are many, many, more. The Aztec fourfold destruction of the world from Mexico, the first and only one to have happened according to their legends is one by water where the god’s warned a good man to take his family and the animals on a giant platform of floating reeds, because they were about to flood the earth. The Epic of Gilgamesh from Ur, Mesopotamia, in this legend the gods wished to destroy every living thing and start again, but one of the gods didn’t like it so he told Gilgamesh to build a massive bowl with a hut in the middle and put all the animals in it. These legends were found on the opposite ends of the globe, separated by land, sea, and language. None of the people groups and cultures that have flood legends had that much contact or even no contact at all. They must have been connected by something such as the Tower of Babel which I will write on in a later article.
